Description:

Head Lice are small about 1/32 to 1/16 inch in size. They can grow to almost an 1/8 inch, in some cases. They are visible to the naked eye. They do not fly or jump. They do crawl and scurry about the hair and scalp. They are an off white, brown, or sort of dirt in color. you.

Detection:

Examine everyone in your home for both lice and nits. First look around the ears and across the back of the neck. Then expand your search to the rest of the head. Look near the base of the hair shafts close to the scalp. The brighter the light the easier they are to find. You may even do this out doors under direct sun light. Try running a fine tooth comb through the hair and then examine the comb.

Even if you do not find any live lice, you may still have a problem. So also look for nits, these are the eggs laid by female lice. Nits are found attached to the individual hair shaft, close to the scalp; usually not more than 1 inch above the scalp. They appear to be a tiny speck of sand on the hair. If you see what might be one, blow on it - If it flies off on the wind - it was likely only a piece of dirt, lint, or dandruff. On the other hand, if it just sits there and does not move - It is likely to be a nit (lice egg).

Now, take a deep breath, relax for a moment or two. If you did not find any lice or nits; congratulations and have a nice day.

Removal:

It is best to use a lice treatment of some type. Just soap and water will give you very clean hair, scalp, and Lice. Lice do not mind a bath now and then. Read and follow any instructions that come with the treatment you have chosen.

Here are some generic removal instructions, that may be of help.

You will need a fine tooth comb, a large towel, a paper towel or two, a chair, and a shower cap. {Plus one victim} Sorry, a sense of humor never hurts and may relieve the stress.

Rinse the hair with water, ring out and damp dry. Apply the treatment of choice. Cover hair and head with shower cap for 15 minutes. You may use a plastic rap or just a towel if a shower cap is not available. Thoroughly rinse the hair and scalp when time is up. Now ring the hair out, and damp dry. You want the hair a bit wet to ease the combing. Nit picking or combing the dead lice and nits from the hair is next. This is the most important part of lice removal.

Combing (nit picking) is a tedious job, but the only way to remove eggs (ie nits) & lice. You need to have a fine-tooth comb, a large towel, paper towel, and a bright light; as suggested earlier. Put the towel over the shoulders, put a damp paper towel near by to wipe the comb on,...section the hair; or rather work on one part at a time. It can help to have some hair clips to section the hair with. Take one thin bunch of hair and run the comb through it; examine the comb and wipe it on the paper towel. Keep repeating the process until you have done the whole head. When complete again rinse the hair and scalp thoroughly and re-examine the hair and scalp to be sure you have removed all lice and nits.

Head Lice Tips:

1. When washing linens, clothes, etc; leave them in the clothes dryer an extra 15 minutes. Even better, when possible hang them to dry outdoors in the sun.

2. Cleanse combs, brushes, clips, barrettes, ribbons, & other hair devices in a 50/50 solution of bleach and water for 30 minutes. Or drop them in boiling water, drop them and shut off the heat and leave them for about 5 minutes.

3. When combing (nit picking) through the hair; first dampen hair with a solution of white distilled vinegar and water; 50/50. Or put the solution in a spray bottle and spray the hair you are working on. This will help loosen the nits from the hair.

4. Another helpful hint when removing the nits....Get a green scrubby (like the ones you would use for cleaning your kitchen) cut it in half. Then when you are removing the nits from the hair shaft, simply wrap the scrubby around the hair strand(s) and pull downwards or up whichever.

5. No one cares for this tip, but I put it in anyway. If you have extra long hair, you may want to cut it [to shoulder length]. Not an absolute, it is just less work to comb through. With boys it works well to shave the head; well not with a razor; just as short as the clippers will go

About Remedies:

Did you know evidence of lice and their eggs were found in mummies by archeologists? They have been with us since the beginning.

One old remedy, that began in the 1800s was to douse ones head with kerosene. This treatment was actually used quite often. Wow! Another treatment used quite a lot in the 1900s was Olive Oil. I do not know if it works well or not. But at least it would probably do no harm. I have also heard that axle grease was tried.

Then there is Tea Tree Oil. This by itself would be very expensive, since it costs a lot to buy enough to cover just one head. However, it does have some very good qualities when added in proper portions to one's shampoo. Still it alone in shampoo is not really enough. Various other oils have been tried with some success. All may work to some extent, but make one heck of a mess to get out of the hair.

I do not endorse using any of the treatments mentioned above. But if I had to pick one - I would go with the mayonnaise. It would be the least expensive and the simplest to remove and for sure the least toxic.

What about the over the counter products at your pharmacy? I myself do not use them, in part because of the chemicals. Any or all may work well, you make the choice as to which one, if any, you want to use.

You can also find products on the Internet. I recommend  Vickie's Remed

Zero Cost Method:

Combing Only (The Zero Cost Method) …….. Combing alone can be an effective way to treating head lice. I do of course recommend finding a lice treatment, or medication for head louse - of your choosing and following the instructions that come with it. I do understand that monetary issues sometimes are a factor since human head lice infestations occur on their own schedule
However if you presently have no other way, get to combing lice and nits (ie eggs)! Begin by wetting the hair; you may add a little cream rinse or conditioner to facilitate the movement of a nit comb (fine tooth) through the hair. This will also stop the ability of head lice to just race through the hair and crawl out of sight. Concentrate initially on removing every bug you find. Then work on the eggs and any bugs you may have missed as you work your way through the hair. You will need to comb the hair - then rinse - then comb a second time in on sitting. With patience and persistence you will eventually remove all lice and nits. Just do not give up, check each day until you find none for 3 days in a row.
